Paying for it

You probably do not have to pay for this yourself

9 public funding sources can pay for a commercial license in Washington. Most people who train here use one. Each is listed below with who runs it, who it is meant for, and the law it comes from.

Ask before you pay. Paying tuition yourself and starting first commonly forecloses money you would otherwise have qualified for. Almost none of these can be applied retroactively. Answer six questions and we will work out which of these are worth asking about, and who to call first.

Where we hold the rules but not the list

For these 7, we can tell you what the money is and who it is meant for, but we cannot yet tell you which specific Washington programs accept it. We have not checked, so we will not imply that we have. Ask the school directly, and ask your WorkSource office, which is usually the one that knows.

  • Basic Food Employment and Training (Washington SNAP E&T)

Administered by DSHS Economic Services Administration

THE ONLY Washington program with no ETPL gate, no Title IV gate, no accreditation gate and no unemployment prerequisite. Its gate is simply 'are you on Basic Food'. Requires the school to be a BFET partner provider. Baseline eligibility statement is UNVERIFIED against a published DSHS source.

Where you apply: Through a BFET partner provider

    7 USC 2015(d)(4); 7 CFR 273.7

  • Federal Pell Grant (traditional)

Administered by US Department of Education

MEASURED COUNT OF WASHINGTON CDL SCHOOLS IN THE TITLE IV UNIVERSE: ZERO. 'Fill out the FAFSA' is bad default advice in Washington and must not be the headline. Branch on institution type first.

    Where you apply: FAFSA

    34 CFR 668.8(d)

  • Opportunity Grant

Administered by WA State Board for Community and Technical Colleges

College-only, and only for programs on that college's approved Opportunity Grant pathway list. Whether any WA college lists CDL is UNVERIFIED. Requires a 2.0 cumulative GPA and a FAFSA-determined need. Targets careers paying at or above the applicable minimum wage (statewide 2026 threshold $17.13).

Where you apply: The college's financial aid office; requires FAFSA

    RCW 28B.50.271, .272, .273

  • Training Benefits Program (keep unemployment while training)

Administered by WA Employment Security Department

This is the single most under-appreciated program for a just-laid-off CDL student. Full-time enrollment is required unless less-than-full-time is approved. Every UI claimant considering CDL school should at minimum be routed to Commissioner Approved Training (RCW 50.20.043) so training does not kill the claim; CAT waives job search but does NOT extend benefits.

Where you apply: ESD, within the 90-day window

    RCW 50.22.155, RCW 50.20.043

  • Washington College Grant

Administered by WA Student Achievement Council

THE CDL TRAP. Only three paths reach this money: a CTC program, a registered apprenticeship (at the reduced rate), or an accredited private career school. How many WA CDL schools are accredited is UNVERIFIED; expect very few. WASFA is the application route for students ineligible for FAFSA.

Where you apply: FAFSA or WASFA

    RCW 28B.92.030(4), RCW 28B.92.200, RCW 28B.92.205

  • Worker Retraining Program

Administered by WA State Board for Community and Technical Colleges

One of the few WA state programs that reaches SELECTED LICENSED PRIVATE SCHOOLS, not only community and technical colleges. Pre-screen at startnextquarter.org.

Where you apply: The college or licensed private school's Worker Retraining office

    SBCTC Worker Retraining program

  • Workforce Pell Grant

Administered by US Department of Education

AS OF 2026-08-24 NO WASHINGTON CDL PROGRAM IS APPROVED, because Washington has published no Governor approval process. Effective 2026-07-20 per 91 FR 29254. Do not tell a Washington user this is available to them.

Where you apply: FAFSA, once a program is Governor-approved

    34 CFR 690.92-690.95; 34 CFR 668.8(n)(4)

What this page is not

It is not an eligibility decision. Only the agency administering the money can make one, and the rules we hold are there to tell you which door to knock on, not to answer for whoever is behind it. Every figure and condition here comes with its citation so you can check it, or hand it to someone who will.

Eligibility for two of these is recorded per program, because that is how it is granted: a school can have one listed program and one that is not. GI Bill approval is granted to the school rather than the program, so it is shown that way. Find a program near you to see what a specific one costs.
